For many class 10 students under the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and CBSE, Mathematics is often seen as a subject of anxiety and memorization. However, scoring a distinction (90%+) does not require memorizing steps or last-minute rote cramming.

1. Understand the First Principles (Zero Cramming)

Every mathematical formula—whether the quadratic formula or the trigonometric identities—originates from basic logical principles. Rather than memorizing a formula sheet, write down the proofs. When you understand the derivation of a theorem, you can reconstruct it under exam stress even if you temporarily forget it.

2. Master the Board Blueprint & Question Weightage

Not all chapters have the same weightage. Focus on high-value chapters first:

  • Algebra (Quadratic Equations & AP): High weightage, highly structured problem formats.
  • Geometry (Triangles & Circles): Step-by-step theorem writing and proper reasons.
  • Trigonometry: Practice identities regularly to spot patterns in LHS-RHS proofs.
  • Statistics & Probability: Highly scoring; avoid silly calculation errors.
"Rote memorization gets you past simple questions, but true concept clarity helps you solve the unseen, challenging questions at the end of the board paper."

3. Maximize Partial Step-Marking

Board examiners do not grade papers based on the final answer alone. Marks are distributed across specific steps:

  • Step 1: List all given variables and draw a neat diagram if applicable (especially in Geometry and Mensuration).
  • Step 2: Clearly write down the formula you intend to use.
  • Step 3: Show step-by-step substitution and calculations.
  • Step 4: Circle the final answer and include proper units (e.g., cm², m/s).

Even if your final calculation goes wrong, you can secure 70% to 80% of the marks for that question by laying out the initial steps correctly.

4. Maintain a Dedicated Rough Column

Neatness is key to board exam success. Draw a clear vertical line on the right margin of your answer script for all calculation work. Do not scribble rough calculations under the steps or in the margins. Keep your central workspace pristine.

5. Rehearse with 10-Year Question Papers

In the last 45 days before the exam, practice solving past papers under real 180-minute conditions. This trains your brain to manage time efficiently and reduces exam-hall panic.
